Okefenokee Trips
January 5 - 7 2009, January 14 - 16 2009 The first day is an eight mile paddle from Kingfisher Landing to Bluff Lake. The first section of the trail is along a channel originally cut for peat mining. Sometimes alligators can be spotted basking in the sun. Fishing can also be good here using top water lures and small spinner baits. The last section of day one is across open prairies full of pitcher plants. Bluff Lake is the site of the first overnight shelter. Here you can fish or just take in the sights while a great meal is prepared. Day two takes you from Durdin Prairie to Territory and Chase Prairies. Between are narrow winding channels that opens to beautiful views surrounded by cypress and pine hammocks. The trail winds through Chaise Prairie, leading to Round Top Shelter, the next nights stop. Round Top has a 360 degree view of the prairie and the night sky. Total miles for day two is 11 miles. Day three follows the historic Suwannee Canal, which was dug in the late 1800's in an attempt to drain the swamp. This 12 mile paddle is more like paddling a river channel lined with pines, cypress, and oaks. This is a popular fishing section with many opportunities to view wildlife, before reaching the final destination, the Suwannee Canal Recreation Area.
